Sticky Bars

It’s been a while since I’ve written a post (mainly due to my dissertation that has been consuming me for the past few months) but since it’s world poetry day today it would be rude not to! So here it is: a poem taken from the first draft of my dissertation with a few tweaks after it didn’t quite make it to the final cut

Sticky Bars

Elbows rest on sticky bars,

Coasters gone, glasses sparse.

A jostling huddle; for drinks, for shots,

All pushing, shoving, “That’s my spot!”

In the pulsing lights and sweaty throng,

Until to one face, I am drawn.

The way you look, the way you stare.

For once I don’t feel like a spare.

But for how long can this last,

Until I’m just part of your past?

A fleeting glance, a casual kiss

And then tomorrow, I’ll be dismissed.
